Reading the Playlist

After finishing a ten-hour solo drive in May 2012, I decided that the iPod needed some maintenance. These are the songs I removed from ‘Anne’s Ipod’ in June 2012:

Song, Band, Comments
  • The Shiney Sea by Apples in Stereo. Too emo + stupid lyrics
  • Sad Song, The Winter Song, Stay Golden by Au Revoir Simone. Kept one song. Too emo and too much annoying synth.
  • Piazza, New York Catcher, Expectations by Belle and Sebastian. After 55 plays of “Expectations”, I’ve had enough…
  • The Black Hills of Dakota by Doris Day.  I decided I hate this song.
  • Lentil, Day Too Soon by Sia.  Sia just didn’t work out for me.
  • Some sappy song by Justin Timberlake. This was on the iPod as a joke and after 241 plays, it’s not funny anymore.
  • Birds, The Nicest Thing by Kate Nash. I’ve really tried to like her, but I just don’t.
  • Pamela Brown by Leo Kottke. No comment.
  • Say Yes by Elliot Smith. Say No.
  • Bridges and Balloons, Peach Pear Plum, The Book of Right On, Sawdust and Diamonds by Joanna Newsome. Kept “The Sprout and the Bean” but wonder why so many songs by this weirdo got onto my iPod.
  • Aqueous Transmission by Incubus. Not good driving music but like the band, generally. Kept two other songs.
  • La Bayadere: Coda, Allegro by Leon Minkus. Often ballet music does not work if there is no ballet to watch with it…
  • Tchaikovsky: Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66, Waltz, conductor Andre Previn. See comment above.
  • Saddest Summer by The Drums. How did this annoying song even get onto my iPod?
  • Gothenburg by Maia Hirasawa. No comment.
  • Eulogy for Joan  by Michael Hoppe. Too sad. Had it on here mostly b/c Iris did a dance to it circa 2005.
  • The Long Way Home, Come Away with Me by Norah Jones. She’s boring.
  • Gospel by The National. Kept “Ada” and “Slow Show”…for now.
  • Tea for Two by Pink Martini. No comment. Must have been a weak moment.
  • Dvorak: Romance for Violin in F Minor, Opus 11, Isaac Stern.  This is a great piece but it’s 13 minutes and not great driving music. I have the CD so can put it back on if I change my mind.
  • Man I Used to Be by K-OS. Woman I used to Be.
  • Rasputin by Boney-M. The Novelty Wore Off (I can just go to a wedding if I really need to hear it).

Other “Anne’s Ipod” facts:
Most played song: “Shipbuilding” by Robert Wyatt.
Least played song that’s still on the Ipod: “French Navy” by Camera Obscura (I fear its days are numbered).
Most songs by one artist: Nick Drake.
Tied for second place: Frank Sinatra, Kimya Dawson, Bob Dylan, Iron and Wine.
Added immediately upon deleting the above listed songs: “Nancy with the Laughing Face” by Kurt Elling (which now puts KE on the “tied for second place list”).
Final comments: Did not remove any jazz numbers tho I think I might be caught in a bit of time warp re: Nick Drake.
